Why the U.S. Needs a National Clean Beauty Standard

In the U.S., thousands of cosmetic ingredients are still legally allowed in beauty and personal care products, even those linked to hormone disruption, allergies, and long-term health risks.

Meanwhile, in the European Union, over 1,600 ingredients have already been banned or restricted in cosmetics. Canada and parts of Asia continue to tighten their regulations. But the U.S.? We’re still behind.

At Vaulabs, we don’t just manufacture clean skincare — we see firsthand how difficult it is for brands to navigate a system that hasn’t caught up with modern science or global expectations.

And that’s why we’re taking action.

A Clean Beauty Lab With a Mission

Our founder, Natalie Vaulin, launched Vaulabs after witnessing the stark difference between regulatory systems in the U.S. and Europe.

Born and raised in Europe, where “clean” is a legal standard, not just a marketing claim, she was shocked to discover that ingredients banned more than a decade ago overseas were still commonly used in American products.

At Vaulabs, we choose not to use them. But we believe that should be the rule, not the exception.

Why We’re Launching a National Clean Beauty Initiative

The goal is simple: to help create a national framework that raises the baseline of ingredient safety in U.S. cosmetics.

This initiative will focus on:

  • Banning ingredients already restricted in the EU and Canada

  • Supporting small brands in clean compliance without added cost or confusion

  • Aligning U.S. safety standards with current toxicology and public health data

  • Building trust between consumers and the beauty industry

Right now, there is no clear federal definition of “clean.”

That’s a problem — for founders, for consumers, and for the future of this industry.

Who This Helps

  • Consumers, who deserve to trust what they’re putting on their skin.

  • Retailers, who want clarity on ingredient safety and compliance.

  • Emerging brands, who need a clear path to launch without loopholes or guesswork.

  • Labs and manufacturers, who want to build safe, transparent, high-performance formulas without regulatory risk.

What’s Next?

We’re actively seeking:

  • Legal and policy experts in cosmetics regulation

  • Public health advisors and researchers

  • Lawmakers and committees focused on consumer protection

  • Retail leaders and retailers who believe in a cleaner industry

  • Founders who are ready to stand behind this mission

If you believe clean should mean safe, we’d love to hear from you.

Together, we can build a future where ingredient safety isn’t optional — it’s expected.
