What a COA Actually Tells You
Every founder asks for the COA. Almost nobody reads what it actually says.
A Certificate of Analysis is not a quality guarantee. It is a snapshot: this batch, these tests, this day. It tells you that the material met specification at the moment it was tested. It says nothing about the batch you receive next quarter, and nothing about how the material behaves inside your formula.
Three things worth checking before you accept one.
First, the specification range. A COA reports a result against a range, and the range is set by whoever wrote the spec. A number sitting at the very edge of an acceptable range is technically passing and practically a warning. Ask what the internal target is, not just the outer limits.
Second, the method. Two labs can test the same active and report different values because they used different methods. If the method is not named on the certificate, the number is not comparable to anything.
Third, what is missing. Most ingredient COAs cover identity, purity, and microbial counts. They frequently do not cover heavy metals, residual solvents, or pesticide residue unless someone specifically asked for those tests. Absence on the certificate is not evidence of absence in the material.
The useful habit is to treat a COA as the beginning of a conversation with your supplier rather than the end of one. The document confirms that testing happened. Understanding which tests, by which method, against which target, is what tells you whether the material is right for what you are building.
